International Albinism Day: Anyaele Calls for Greater Inclusion, Seeks End to Stigma

The Chairman of the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, Dr. David Obinna Anyaele, has called for greater inclusion, protection of rights and equal opportunities for persons with albinism, urging stakeholders to intensify efforts toward combating discrimination and social exclusion.

Anyaele made the call in a goodwill message to mark the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day, celebrated globally on June 13.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones,” he described the occasion as a reminder of the need to embrace human diversity and promote dignity, equality and respect for persons with albinism.

Dr. Anyaele reiterated that persons with albinism has continued to make meaningful contributions to society despite facing health challenges, stigma, discrimination and other social barriers.

He noted that the Abia State Government, through the Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, has implemented measures aimed at improving the welfare of persons with albinism in the state, including the regular distribution of more than 300 sunscreen kits, financial support to the Abia State chapter of the Albinism Association of Nigeria and support for advocacy and public awareness programmes.

Anyaele reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to promoting an inclusive society where all citizens, regardless of skin colour or disability, can access opportunities and participate fully in social, economic and political life.

He also called on government institutions, civil society organisations, communities, families and development partners to strengthen awareness campaigns aimed at addressing myths, stereotypes and discriminatory practices against persons with albinism.

The disability rights advocate stressed the importance of collective action in advancing acceptance, protecting human rights and ensuring that persons with albinism enjoy equal participation in all aspects of society.

He congratulated persons with albinism in Abia State, Nigeria and across the world on the occasion and urged them to remain proud of their identity while continuing to contribute to the development of their communities.
